About Project Sustainable

The project SUSTAINABLE aimed to test and validate new edge artificial intelligence (AI) systems as Decision Support System (DSS), on a sound economic and technical basis, for suitable precision agriculture management procedures according to the specific climate, geographical, and environmental conditions. DSS will help to define optimal solutions taking into account the constraints related to different development levels of the areas, types of farmers, type of cultivation, and infrastructures around them.

Sustainable DSS will give optimized solutions in terms of energy efficiency, water consumption, and reuse, also in extreme conditions as we increasingly witness due to climate changes. Having a novel tool to face adversities in agriculture, especially in developing countries, will produce a positive effect on the global economy (maintaining the cost of agricultural products), will reduce the scale of economic emigration (often due to one or several years of bad harvesting) and will help to distribute richness all over the planet.

OUR OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this project includes

EO1: Economic viability of SUSTAINABLE measurement systems: 

  • To maximum crop yields with minimum farm inputs (reduced energy consumption, fertilizer and pesticide)
  • Provide understanding of resource conservation and utilization in a crop and aquaculture integrated system;
  •  Explain economic and ecological relationship between a crop and aquaculture system; 
  • Highlights the importance of integrated system in improving the agricultural income and food security of peri-urban economy; 
  • To increase production efficiency and the quality of cultivated crops; 
  • Improves the quality of life of rural farmers by reducing heavy labour and tiresome tasks.

SO1:Propose a smart agriculture system based on IoT sensor nodes which are powered by solar energy and are used for monitoring and control of agriculture fields.

SO2:Different crops and product applications The overall objective is to develop a cloud-based platform for precision agriculture using machine learning algorithms

Implementation of a distributed AI platform for the implementation of AI algorithms in a distributed way, both centrally and on edge devices, eliminating the need for huge data exchange from the farm to a central computational infrastructure. Such devices could be computational devices installed on the farm or UAVs utilized for data acquisition.

The main objectives for the AI platform are:

  • Development of a portable, low-cost set of sensors to be used in an agricultural setting for specific problems
  • Research of the best AI algorithms to solve relevant problems as described in the overall goals of this project
  • The development of an AI-based software for the sensors to be able to solve a wide array of problems with the smallest possible set of different sensors
  • The development of a mobile app interface for the controlling and management of sensors 
  • The development of a set of training courses for the partners and the agricultural partners
  • Generate models to predict the class of the coconut by using machine learning techniques.

KO1: Transfer of knowledge and multidisciplinary integration of competences.

KO2: Validation of the project result in a real environment: the rural living lab objective
